I am going to suppose that
1) You have a Microsoft windows partition (mounted in /mnt/win, for
instance)
2) You have RH7
(both points are not a must, but the instructions are shorter this way)
Follow these steps:
1) become root
2) cp /mnt/win/windows/fonts/*.ttf /usr/share/AbiSuite/fonts
3) cd /usr/share/AbiSuite/fonts
4) ttmkfdir . | egrep iso8859-15 | sort > fonts.scale
5) wc -l fonts.scale
6) copy the number that wc returns at the start of fonts.scale.
fonts.scale should looks like:

abalc.ttf -monotype-Abadi MT Condensed

7) mkfontdir .
8) /etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs restart
9) abiword
10) Take a look.
The smart reader should recognice the steps that [s]he should customize.
These fonts are free (as in beer). You could use them even if you have
not purchased a copy of Microsoft Windows (they are freely downloadable
at the microsoft web page, but I have no links right now). You can
legally use AbiWord with these fonts (even if AbiWord is GPL and the
fonts are not GPL) because you're *NOT* *distributing* AbiWord (aren't
you? :). You can not distribute AbiWord with these fonts (if you do it,
you will violate AbiWord license and the fonts license).
Weird symbols (as bullets) will be screwed. Other than that, AbiWord +
Microsoft fonts rocks.
