This kind of feature is best served by a "plugin" architecture.
Gnumeric and Gaim are good examples. Filtering selected text is a
rather simple API for a plugin. A more complex API would required to
support, for instance, editing MathML. But a simple filter API could
support transformations of MathML via a symbolic algebra plugin.
