This was posted to the user list, but no-one there seemed to have any
ideas. I'm forwarding it here at Gary's request, because he isn't on
this list. Please do Cc any answers. Thanks.

Subject: Fonts show in xfontsel but not in AbiWord

A google search for font problems and two postings to comp.windows.x
newsgroups didn't turn up any clues: I have an old 486 with the Chips
and Tech video (256 colour) and XFree86 4.0.3, trying to run AbiWord
from abisuite-0.9.2 Linux i386 dynamic

While AbiWord is running (launched with the shell script) xfontsel
will display all of the AbiWord fonts, but /all/ fonts inside the
AbiWord application edit screen do not display; menus are labelled,
but if you type, the cursor will only move for a space (which prints
as a dot).

I'm installing this on a micro-distro called Peanut Linux, losely
based on Slackware trimmed down to fit inside 300Mb. Could there be
some vital missing but undetected piece of the Gtk kit that might be
responsible?

ldd shows no missing libraries in AbiWord_d (libgtk-1.2)

Any ideas what might be going wrong here? Any suggestions on how I
might gather more information? I understand that AbiWord uses its own
internal font rendering engine, but what could be so different that
all other X apps are able to view the AbiWord fonts, but AbiWord is
not able to view any fonts at all?
