ispell has a number of compile-time options (array sizes etc.) that affect
its behaviour, and the NetBSD maintainer of AbiWord has patched (patch-ae)
AbiWord's ispell dictionary reader to match NetBSD's ispell defaults - so
AbiWord's dictionaries (LittleEndian32.hash & BigEndian32.hash and all
abispell stuff) is incompatible. I can understand why the NetBSD
maintainer opted to do this (non-duplication of dictionaries, etc.) but I
don't entirely approve.
None of which explains why spelling is broken.
I'm not sure, but AbiWord ought to compile un-patched on NetBSD, and that
would allow you to use abispell stuff - it would certainly make it easier
for us to help you!
