I think we need a new newsgroup, akin to
alt.sysadmin.recovery, called something like
alt.opensourcedevelopment.recovery.
Just as sysadmins have to deal with "luzers" who are
completely clueless and constantly makes demands on
the system administrator; Open Source Devlopers have
to deal with "luzers" who do nothing but whine about
how open source software does not have feature X.
This class of sub-species is generally too clueless to
read the documentation, the roadmap for the software,
the FAQ entries about what is planned for the
software, or anything else which explains what
features are planned for the software in question.
Instead, the jump right on the mailing list, and
request that the software should have <feature they
desire>. Almost always, the feature in question is
one that 50 other people have already asked, and one
which is prominitely visible on the software's "TO DO"
list.
Of course, there is the mostly harmless Luzer of OSS,
who merely askes that feature X be added. Then, there
is the rude ultra-luzer, who feels that software X is
horrible because, dangit, it doesn't have feature
X/has bug Y/etc.
This kind of ultra-luzer needs a good LARTing before
being allowed to have access to the internet again.
Let us take the person who wrote the following
missive:
"Sorry, I don't see how anyone can consider a word
processing program which can't handle tables to be
anything other than a toy/programming assignment".
This obviously shows a rather severe case of
luzerness. Did this person posses the basic
intelligence to go to the web site in question and see
what features were being planned for future releases?
No. Did this person bother to sign up on Bugzilla and
vote for this feature? No. Does this person know
that writing a word processor is not exactly trivial,
and that there have been countless aborted attempts to
make open-source word processers before AbiWord came
along; none of which ever implemented tables? No.
Does this person have any level of appreciation for
all of the hard word that open source devlopers go
through to write open source software? No.
People like this obviously need treatment. They are
obviously both dilusional and incapable of realizing
that people besides themselves have feelings. Perhaps
we should have a blood-urine sampler attached to their
internet connection, insuring that they are properly
does on whatever medication they take before getting
on the internet.
