Well that'd loose one of more important benefits of using gettext.

Usually, a .po file contains a mapping between an english string and a
string of the foreign language.

In Dom's approach, if I understood it correctly, Abiword will maintain a
mapping between string ids and english strings. For these english strings,
the translation will then be looked up.
