I just want to add some comments on which parts are
specific to smart quotes, and which go beyond to cover
    any remapped characters.

Smart quote specific but possibly smart hypen/m-dash
support is possible in the same place.

    Smart quote specific.

    Smart quote specific.

    Smart quote specific.

This goes beyond to at least a) other common symbols
    such as em-dash, TM, etc.

(A perfect solution would even soft-remap the TM
symbol to two letters which behave as a single
character for selection etc - this might be too
tricky for a single special case though)

The "Show Para" part should go even further to let
the user know about any remapped or missing character.
Perhaps tooltips for completely missing characters
    will be possible?

Some of this will surely be specific to smart quotes
while other parts will be more general. This is sure
    to be the toughest job.

Hope I didn't seem too overbearing or argumentative
and I wish I could work on it too ):
