    It was that there were ones marked bidi and ones not
    so marked that threw me off. The ones with two
    versions were stable builds, but I didn't read

    Thanks for all the info. I've got it working now,
    albeit at a different cybercafe which has AbiWord on
    all its computers anyway (:
    I couldn't remember what the problem was but yes it
    was that there was a missing DLL msvc7.dll or
    somesuch.
    I had been giving up at this point, especially since
    write access was blocked to some directories as was
    entering file paths into Explorer etc. At this place
    I was able to find and install the DLL from the
    internet. Now I'm just trying to remember how to get
    a copy of World.abw off the net to test...

    Got it - works! I'll go fix the bug report now.
