    You may want to have a look at the atk interfaces in the gnome
    accessibility toolkit. SUN has done an enourmous amount of work on
    supplying generic interfaces for different types of data access.
    Although it is unlikely that the code will be at all useful in this
    context, the interface itself will probably supply some useful
    thought.
