o ditch nasty "set -e" & re-route stderr from autogen.sh to autogen.err
o check for PKG_CHECK_MODULES in autogen.sh rather than configure
(this should kill the "dnl"-unrecognized weirdness that affects autoconf)
o fix nasty iconv detection bug (bad Frank)
