"built-in" is an option for systems that can't actually handle plugins. When the correct version of the plugins is available and already built, the built-in option actually builds them into the main binary. This is for the likes and QNX and so forth that won't hand external sub-programme modules, unicies (posix-compliant platforms) should NOT need this.
As for plugins (if you followed THEIR build information) make sure they're of the same version as the binary (i.e. if you're using an individual release binaries plugins with your head build--that means, build the plugins from the cvs as well).
