Here is another large amount of casts, constness, and
warnings fixed.

I've tested unix builds with and without xft and
debugging.
Non-Unix builds will probably be affected.
Apologies in advance for any doughnuts I'll owe.

Please don't "fix" anything by changing C++ casts back
to C casts - that's almost never the correct fix.
