    sorry, i misread your suggestion.

    I am not sure how to handle colour changes in an accessible way and i
    would have to ask and expert.

    the suggestion Joaquin made was that the caret should change from
    | to [] (my ascii approximation of a block, which is techinically a
    cursor, iirc).
