And some say Microsoft ain't evil...
If this is true then it is a scandal.

ps: under DMCS and EUCD and a new EU directive in preparation it would
be a crime prossecuted to the maximum extent of the law to reverse
engineer this DRM...

Subject: [Free-sklyarov-uk] Microsoft intends to use DRM to prevent competing office products maintaining compatability
Date: 27 Jun 2003 16:58:04 +0100
I've just received information from a source within Microsoft, who has
told me that it is now Microsoft *policy* to use the DRM features of
future versions of Office to make it impossible for competing products,
such as Open Office, to maintain compatability.
Apparently, the use of DRM as means of thwarting competition is now a
significant focus of Microsoft development effort.
Whilst the news is in no way surprising, and, indeed, we've been
predicting just such an abuse of DRM by Microsoft for some time, this is
the first time I've heard from a reliable source that the primary raison
d'etre for DRM in Office is not customer demand, but the simple,
cold-blooded, anti-competitive practices for which MS has become famous.
