But, as a user, if I want to e.g. attach a document to an email, do you
expect me to know that I need to include *all* the contents of a
directory? The natural thing for most (all?) users is to look for a
single file. It sounds like an unnecessary usability problem.

Um, how is a .zip or .tar.gz "fragile"? I challenge you to quantify
that statement. I don't see how a .zip or .tar.gz is any less fragile
than any other way of storing a document, compressed or uncompressed.
