Apple do use directories (as Bundle) for storing Keynote documents.
Keynote is their presentation tool, like to create compound document.
The heart is an XML file.
This cause some portability problem as this require some sort of
flattening when carrying in e-mail and downloads, but it is less fragile
than a .zip or .tar.gz like do OO.o and KOffice respectively.

Just to give an alternative path that ends up being the same.

And finally MS-Office use OLE streams, which leads to the same thing but
differently stored on disk.
