Only that the Online View in OpenOffice (or whatever it is called) may
provide a source of inspiration. I am very comfortable with the idea of
how web browsers (notably Opera) wrap and fit everything to make the best
use of screen size while keeping things readable.

It might be best to define what we really want as you have done and then
create a mode that does it rather than conforming to what Microsoft
describes as Normal mode if it doesn't really work all that well. (I
suspect more recent versions of Microsoft Word included other modes which
were more useful than Normal mode and they had to keep Normal mode for
historical reasons).
