OK - I'm in the process of working out the details with the Ubuntu
folks, but it seems that some sort of AbiWord 2.6.2 will be in Hardy!
If you'd like to test and are running Hardy, here is my personal package
archive, add it to your sources.list:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/cezpi4y02/ubuntu hardy main

It should be fully functional at this point, although lacking
AbiCollab. Yes, all sorts of import/export is included by default,
including ODT and Microsoft's new format whatever we call it.
(WordPerfect, too.)

Enjoy!

Ryan
