OK, so it looks like it's preference time when I get around to coding it
on Windows - possibly not until I get back to the States. How about the
other platforms?

I don't actually remember - I think it's much worse on Linux (as in, on
a 600mhz machine with Dapper, really, really bad), but I tend to be
cautious in drawing performance conclusions from VM experiences. I'll
know the answer better when I get back to a native Windows install that
I'll put 2.6.x on.
