I agree, I think this should got into the 2.6 tree after the 2.6.0
release, so it is ready for 2.6.1 (it is non-invasive feature, that is
easy to turn off again, should that become necessary).

Thinking about this some more, this cannot be translated in the normal
strings file, as you only have one string set loaded at a time; probably
simplest thing is to have a hardcoded table that maps the four
typographic quotes to unicode code points; there are going to be only a
few distinct combinations here, so should need to store only very small
amounts of data.
