Abiword 2.8.1 crashiness

I am experiencing crashes when inserting a symbol in 2.8.1, built on
Slackware with the Slackbuild featured here:
http://slackbuilds.org/repository/13.0/office/abiword/.
I first thought it was the issue mentioned at http://uwog.net/news/?p=37 -
but then, it might be what is mentioned here:
http://bugzilla.abisource.com/show_bug.cgi?id=11731
Not much of a Bugzilla veteran; Is there anything I can add?
