Some more general comments:
If you are more of a Windows developer, you can also start with
building AbiWord using Microsoft Visual Studio [1].

Pls feel free to go through the AbiWord's bugzilla, our bug repository
[2] to have a look at the issues that you can fix. Your chances to get
into an organization will be higher, if you have already provided a
few patches to the project.

Start hanging on at AbiWord's irc. #abiword at irc.gnome.org. You will
be able to meet most of the developers there.
