In my opinion there's a need to backport the corresponding bugfixes, which include some critical bugs, to a new stable 2.8.7 branch. Unlikely all the new features of 3.0 will be merged and debugged in near time.
The majority of Linux and Windows users have no skill or desire to compile Abiword manually and have to deal with version more than an year old. They still report the same bugs which were fixed.
Couldn't someone actually do this?
