I've been working on this, and just attached an implementation into:
http://bugzilla.abisource.com/show_bug.cgi?id=13410

On the patch it's been only made to enable selection handles for
touchscreen devices, so it could need some tweaking to test on eg. mice.
Here's a screenshot of the feature with the right theming bits in place:
