we're goin' to the show...

As most of you have probably already realized, there's been an intense
flurry of activity recently in the abi/src code trees. Everyone's been
ultra-focused on getting AbiWord into the best possible shape to show it off
at LinuxWorld Expo in San Jose next week:

We've spent a long time now plugging away at the fundamentals "underneath
the hood" and we're really excited about how nicely the product's coming
along. Most of the feedback we're getting from people is that this is a
very promising, usable word processor that happens to be missing their
favorite feature. Of course, everyone has a *different* favorite, but
that's another story...

(( Hint -- Last week's 0.3.4 release was a great preview, and all of your
feedback has helped us tighten things up for creating a show build we can
all be proud of. If anyone's still sitting on any patches they want to get
into a 0.5.0 release on, say, Monday, now's the time. ))

Now that the product is coming along so nicely, it's time to really start
spreading the news about how cool AbiWord is. This means breaking out the
secret weapon -- marketing. Stuff like:

- free t-shirts,
- cool slogans,
- funky graphics,
- effusive evangelists,
- going to trade shows,
- talking to the press,

and all sorts of stuff which has nothing to do with compilers. It's ugly
work that most self-respecting geeks tend to avoid like the plague, but
somebody's gotta do it. So, to get the ball rolling, Eric and I are going
to spend most of the next week, sans compilers, in booth #1436 at the show,
along with some very enthusastic marketing help from our new Open Source
Evangelist:

Anyone who's within striking range of the Bay Area should make sure to get
over to the show. I think you'll be *quite* pleased at the results.

:-)

For those of you who can't make it, our newest employee has a digital camera
and will be posting pictures throughout the show. For a preview, check out

Wow. I just realized that I spent too long writing this note and Linux
Today beat me to the punch:

Gotta run!

PS: We can't get you into the conference, but if you need free expo passes,
let us know.
