I'm interested in this problem... I've never had a Word 97 (version 8
format
document) fail to open. Word documents of format version 6 and 7 fail
since the word importer right now doesn't know how to deal with them.

I have heard reports of failed imports on some Windows platforms.
By chance, were you using the Win32 version of AbiWord?
