AbiWord Weekly News #49, (2001, week 25, released 2001.06.23)

Welcome to issue 49 of the AbiWord Weekly News.

Still moving towards 0.9.0. Even though we didn't see as much action this week as I had hoped, there were fixed quite a few bugs, some features were polished, and Patrick Lam revealed he's brewing on endnotes which may just get ready in time for 1.0.

Project Of the Week

POW (Project Of the Week) and the new uPOW (User Project Of the Week) is an attempt at attracting new developers and entice help from users by lowering the bar of entry to doing something constructive for AbiWord. A POW will describe a goal and often outline how to get there.

Presently we have a few unclaimed POWs. Please see the POW status page for more details.

Bug Update

Here's the AbiWord bug update for the last week. If you can spare some time, please help us triage the bugs - you don't need to be able to program to do this.

Bug Counts

These are the bug counts for the past 4 weeks:

Date: Submitted: QA: Open:

Bug Votes

As a user of AbiWord, you are able to vote on bugs you'd like to see closed. The process is quite simple:

  1. Create yourself an account if you don't already have one.

  2. Bring up the bug list.

  3. Click on Bug IDs to read bug details.

  4. If you find an interesting bug you'd like to have fixed, cast your vote by clicking on the "Vote for this bug" link on the bug description page.

  5. You have 30 voting points you can cast in whatever proportions you'd like on anything between 1 and 30 bugs. But note that developers will likely prioritize a bug with 30 single votes than a bug with a single 30-unit vote. So vote with lower unit counts (5 or so) to make your voice heard!

From the sorted list of votes, we found the current Top 10 Bugs to be:

In the past week, the following 4 bugs have been closed (i.e., closed and verified fixed):

1409, 1420, 1482 and 1570

On the Mailing List

Traffic on the developer mailing list is definitely going back up, this week reaching 250 postings.

You may also find interesting threads on the user and documentation lists (unfortunately the archive for the latter is broken at the moment).

This week, interesting topics on the developer list included:

  1. HOWTO use the perl bindings: Joaquposted a HOWTO for using the perl bindings and received a lot of feedback.

  2. Memory leaks: Andrew pointed out that AbiWord is leaking memory badly. Resulted in some nice traces from Mike.

  3. Fwd: not worth downloading: We got a bad review it appears, but there's general consensus the guy didn't actually make a decent effort of using AbiWord. However, there were some valid points raised and I think people took some notes.

  4. partial progress towards endnotes: Patrick Lam announced that he's been hacking on endnotes. That would be a quite nice feature to have for 1.0 and it may just happen.

  5. profile results for new UT_* implementations?: Paul Rohr asked for profiling data for the new helper class implementations. There's some background information on implementation and reasons for the reimplementation in the thread.

  6. Ispell hashes.: Martin asked for help building a repository of ispell dictionaries. Please make sure to send him one for your language if he doesn't already have it.

  7. Towards Version 0.90: Martin posted an updated list of issues to be resolved before the 0.9.0 release.

  8. UCS-2 vs. UCS-4: Mike asked if we should consider switching to a different internal character representation in AbiWord. Thats a valid concern seeing as Unicode already has more characters than can be represented with a 16 bit data type.
