AbiWord Weekly News #146, (2003, week 22, released 2003.06.01)
Welcome to this issue 146 of the AbiWord Weekly News.
Follow-ups:
Johan Björk is not Pierre Abbat, and we did get some of last week's HIGrrrification™ in screenshot form!
This week in development
I hope you like screenshots....I hope you like a LOT of screenshots. I hope your religion requires screenshots, because there's a lot of them, especially thanks to Christian Neumair, a.k.a. Manny. Additionally, a new Win32 binary sneaks its way in; you can get caught up on the development of MacOS X's port, and 1.0.6 is no longer a running gag. That's right...its out there...somewhere! Lucky Mac OS X users....
Request for user assistance
Windows users, your help is doubly requested*. We would like to see more bug reports coming from the Windows crowd, so, if you're feeling more daring, please download and try out the Win32 binaries when they're available. If you want some sweet functionality in AbiWord II: The Wrath of Dom, you will have to participate. You could also consider joining Project Blue Ant.

Discussions
Traffic on the developer mailing list has settled at about 200-400 postings per week. This week, interesting topics on the developer list included:
-
Commit: Glade/HIG WordCount dialog : Last week, some HIGrrrification work was completed with no screen shots for our hungry eyes. Dom, shortly after reading what he may have mistaken as a "whine," corrected my, I mean, our situation. Most previous and current commits now include nice proprietary jpg images for your drooling. May I introduce to you, the HIG you've known for all these years, Sgt. Peppers' Dialogues Club Screen Shots:

Commit: Localized normal.awt files and re: localise normal.awt (bidi options) : Dom's gone a long way to advancing locale specific needs of Abiword. Replace what he called the "hackish" layer of system.profiles, Normal.awt* is expected to fix many of the locale specific. Though shorter, this thread follows a couple of concepts, both of Abiword and of a wishlist for Operating Systems. In the latter thread, there is extensive discussion on how awt works compared to dot and css. Also discussed is an easier to use menu item or dialogue.
-
commit: Export column widths to HTML. , commit: Images get exported to HTML again. : Martin continues last week's HTML work, including fixed column widths of tables. More interesting is the work done to counter the drawing of table lines, specifically as it counters an anti-aliasing effect. Later, an adjustment was made to ensure that images would scale correctly when the size of the browser window was adjusted.
-
commit (wv): sprm.c : Sperm.
-
changes in find and replace win32 and changes to Find/Replace win32 with last requests : D. Elbers has sent in some Win32 patches for the Find and Replace dialogues. Just a reminder to those of you interested in helping us improve Abiword, here's some patch etiquette: Creation should begin with a minimum of cvs diff -u > patch_file.diff or you could opt for Mark's cvs -q -z3 diff -Nauw . > patch_file.diff with both being from the "abi" directory. Second, CVS browsing is designed to make it easy to see the differences, and general information of what was fixed should be stated in the your message, so, you don't need to mark much of your specific changes in the code. Finally, due to issues with some MUA's, please compress the patch file into some archive (gzip, bz2, et c); this will prevent some formatting alterations that would otherwise occur.
With that out of the way, I present Find and Replace. -
Mac port status : Hub gives to you a constant reminder that he loves AbiWord and its users more than he resents Apple for their jerk-off-ability. The readers of the CVS Statistices, all 12 of you, may have noticed that Hub continued to make commits even that week. Now, you can watch his Cocoa progress in his site table and read up on it in his Advogato blog.
-
commit (HEAD) : Tomas adds code to error out any attempt to load binary files. If people want to open a binary file, they can use a text or hex editor, not a word processor. Unlike MSWord, AbiWord's importer is not to be abused in this way; this is a part of MSWord Tomas believes we shouldn't emulate.
-
Win32 binary : Mikey creates another plugin-less Win32 binary for Windows users. You may fetch it here. Users interested in making the whole thing from source should read Jeremy's reply for creating plugins et c.
-
commit (wv): pap.c, chp.c : The great debate rages on, "How much of the ongoing changes in .doc are intentional to screw up other word processors and how much of them are the result of mass incompetence?" I'm sure no one will ever really know, especially psychiatrists and particle physists. Perhaps, this is why documentation is lousy and MS wants to switch to XML...they've given up.

drawLine is f*cked? : Marc proves a little bit of logic can be a tedious thing. Cross platform ain't what it used to be, especially when drawing a line. You'll have to stay tuned for future development details! Images referenced in this thread were not included due to distracting variations.
-
Copy and Paste between MS Word and AbiWord in Linux. : The folks at CrossOver Office have proven their extreme coolness in the eyes of Martin. Martin has tested out MSWord with it and found RTF copy & paste works out perfectly; anticipate seeing this a GUADEC
-
Release 1.0.6 : Hub strikes me as the kind of guy who takes his running jokes seriously. Until I see binaries (say, mid-week), Latest Releases will remain unchanged. Mind you, you will probably be able to download it from SourceForge soon enough. Users of Frank's Mac OS X binary (which was temporarily placed with 1.0.5), may consider themselves the first official users of 1.0.6.
Traffic on the user mailing list is sporadic at best. Often, a good topic comes up, but users tend to only respond to the original poster rather than the list (as well), which limits what I would add, as the only lone threads I post are announcements of importance or points of great interest. This week, interesting topics on the user list included:
-
MSYS build : Jack Dodds asks something many of you (and myself, really) wanted to know for a couple of weeks. What is an MSYS build? Why would it interest Windows users? Why isn't it official? The answers are, MSYS is the GNU compiler/build tools running natively on win32; which is to say that it is a Win32 binary; however, it is not included because the official builds (usually from Jeremy) are expected to Just Work™, and that includes the plug-ins. Jack wrote back to me after I explained why I separated it out. He says, "I've installed it. Looks good!"
*Normal.awt: AbiWord Template, similar in function to the .dot files of MS Office. These files are used specifically for altering the way Abiword works with specific files. They do not handle the User Preferences type information, like toolbar layout.

Weekly Prize Patch
Dom, with the help of all those of you who donated to help keep AbiWord great, re-established the Weekly Prize Patch. Established at $45 pre-charges (read: the financial companies cut), the prize is awarded by the decision of Martin and Dom, both of whom must agree on the winner. Though neither Dom nor Martin may vote for themselves, they posses to "trumps" that allow them to vote for the other, therefore nullifying that other's vote. Most importantly, winning is entirely dependent on how lagered-up Martin and Dom are at the time in question.
No One
No one received the Patch Prize between the twenty-fifth and thirty-first of May.
POWs
This section is to be changed to integrate with the rest of the AbiSource POW pages. New version to be ready with 2.0...or next week, depending on how much work-work I get done. Scroll, scroll, scroll...
The concept of a "Project Of the Week" is to single out tasks of major interest that outside developers might be interested in providing assistance to. Until a "best way" of listing POWs come to mind, they shall be listed in a short description. Any user interested is welcome to assist in tackling these POWs. If you know someone who's interested, you can link directly to a POW, in order, they're pow5 (at the top) through pow1 (at the bottom). Reminder to developers, I can't post them if you don't submit them. Additionally, feel free to announce if one of these is finished (in case you don't mention it on the list or in the cvs). Oh, and in case you didn't notice, they're a great way to get money from Dom, really!

Recommended Outline: Create a plugin for AbiWord that allows the checking of style and diction. The source code for the gnu style and diction tools is available here: http://www.gnu.org/software/diction/diction.html
As a prototype you might be able to hack something using the AbiCmd plugin to wrap the style and diction tools. The AikSaurus (Thesaurus) plugin should also be a helpful guide.
When you get the basics working you could try to get Abiword to display green squiggle underlines to mark errors, or otherwise work on a good user interface.

Recommended Outline: You must become magical to know how to fix this.
Comments: "The problem is that printing on Windows is broken with several brand of printer drivers (see dependent bugs). It appears that with standard PostScript driver it does not happen. It appears also that version 0.9.6 had less problems than 1.0.1 so we might find out where the regression is bu diffing.
"Please, be sure to read all the bug reports. Even partial fix are accepted.
"Fixes must be done against STABLE tree and possibly ported to HEAD (the later can be done as a second step)."

Release HackDown
This is an AbiWord Weekly News original concept: The Release Hackdown. In the table below, you can watch what bugs are being fixed in preparation for the very next release. Check the key at the bottom to understand formatting.
No pressure, guys, I'm sure only 2000 or so people will be watching to see what you do weekly. That breaks down to about 285 people daily and 12 people hourly, so, it's like being peeked at once every five minutes, literally. "Isn't that veird!?"

Last Updated: April 10, 2003Approximately once a month, don't hedge bets, I'll get this updated by asking (read: whining at) dom. In the meantime, whenever you want to see how much is in and where it gets diverted, just peek down here.
Word of caution, numbers lightly fudged due to (hopefully) temporarily incomplete data. Like a consultant's suggested price, you'll find hidden meaning in the data if you stare long and hard. Surgeon's General's Warning: Staring long and hard may have psychotropic affects; keep out of reach of people who like that sort of thing.
I cannot promise the time of de-fudging, nor can I promise there will be de-fudging any time soon. However, I feel confident that there will be some de-fudging going on.
