I actually got feedback from HappyGuy! I'm going to name a cat after him. Linus is first in line, however, like any other self-respecting geek, followed by the Lone Gunman (each individually, include Yves), and Jack and Sam (O'Neill and Carter, though, I've been encouraged to go with fish), and, of course, Alan, but only because Maddog doesn't want to be cat (I think he has dementia or something). I'm going to have to live a long time...or people will think I'm queer¹. Anyhow, I've learned that the AWN is on a freakish list of things that only weirdos read². I'll discuss that more in the SOTW. HappyGuy! will hear back from me soon enough; I just haven't gotten there yet.

New AbiDevelopers and an AbiTranslator with positive attitudes shine on this week, while the ability to translate the Windows installer has already been taken advantage of, and MacOS X gets an automatic builder. Also included is an exclusive present for AbiLovers from FootNotes' own stro! Additionally AbiWord 2.0.3 is anticipated to be tagged this Wednesday! See! You wouldn't know that if this came out on time!
Request for User Assistance
Attention Indic and Arabic users! We need more of you to attempt to use and report bugs on CVS Head. As we continue to improve the glyph-shaping engine, we will need to know what is working and what is not. You, our users, are an essential part of our community development. Please participate in helping us improve the application all of us are using.
In case you haven't guessed, the fact that the plea below, languages, has remained unchanged is because no-one has even told us they're trying to help. However, we were told that two were not that different (if at all) from a close linguistic relative. That said, please-oh-please give us assistance.
Hi there. We're looking for people who can help keep AbiWord accurate and uptodate in a number of languages. Please look over them and see if ither you or someone you know might be able to assist us. Remember, your contribution is not only welcomed or encouraged but is also documented, for an easier-to-brag experience. The languages we are looking for are listed below:

Due to the traffick of people who are trying to help with picked up languages, those who are interested in helping us are encouraged to join ither mailing list. Please read the instructions for the list you are most interested in joining to get the correct address. Joining, as you'll find out, is a simple three step process. First, send a letter to one email address; second confirm you sent the letter by sending a reply, and third...oops, there is no step three. Ok, so, excluding all the minor steps of what to click and/or type, it's really a simple two-step process.
There are just two important reminders in using the mailing lists which all users are expected to do. If you want your message to even make it to the list, you message will need to be in plain text only. Due to an insurgence of a certain virus a while back, all HTML email is rejected for reasons of sanity. Webmail users will have to figure out how to turn on plain-text only before sending email. Second, you are required to send the language in Engrish or English. For those of you who don't speak English well enough to send Engrish, it is recommended that you send the letter in both your native language (identify your language please) and after that, in the same message, send it in a machine-translated version of your message, like BabelFish, in case no-one who speaks your language is available to translate your message for the list. Failure to follow these proceedures in the past have led to frustration and resentment. We apologise in advance for any inconvenience these two requests may cause you.
Silliness of the Week
“Well look at this morose muthafuchsia right here; looks like some spit in his donut holes.” Kevin Smith fans know what I meant. I have found nothing short of the absolute oddest bullcrap to share with you people this week.
Lets begin with one of the dust gathering bits of the Internet, TimeDoctor. Now, I haven't really decided what makes it sing to me...but I have some parts I can't help but love. A discussion space with phrases, like, “Spread your own libel,” and, “There are <number> lawsuits pending.” just sings to me. And, you really can't beat that red-ray gleaming penis, or whatever that thing is, with anything short of a bigger red-ray gleaming penis. Don't believe me? See here. Note: This should crash some browsers.
Speaking of the Google Cache, or Google, really, I want to share another AbiMoment with you. Have you ever met our AbiGooglismNEATO? Abiword is the crown jewel of AbiSource EVER! AbiWord beats off my cat. AbiWord smells like testicles. AbiWord scares small children. AbiWord raped my mother back in '74. AbiWord ain't yo' father's bo'chit.
Bitter KDE users who actually care about UserLinux (i.e. Bruce Perens) giving you the bird, at least both such lusers, must have been in a state of shock upon reading this total line. Yup, every single week, Dom tows in the bucks. Now, for those of you who lack critical reading skills when visiting, Open Books, here are a few things you should try to remember, “ Last Updated: Month Day, Year,” and “Approximately once a month.” I have noticed that, somewhere down the line, I stopped mentioning this was an “all of time” thing, so, I've added one more paragraph re-clarifying that for you. Additionally, if you want to, you're welcome to do the QT port, if you two have enough non-troll time to spare — I know how important trolling is to some people, but if you can code, feel free to join the effort.
Now, another serious matter. I found and fell in love with the idea of SchoolForge. I apparently missed the original Slashdot story to this, so, I think it should have a new one. Additionally, people stopped doing stuff with it for the most part, so, if its of interest of you, look into it. I think it's a great idea and seems like something that would catch the attention of people trying to help place Open Source into the lower educational circles. Anyone who tells me its in a state of perma-dead is a Bruce Perens loving jagoff! I have hope! I have dreams!

This week, I also took the time to read about The Commercial Development Process of Third Party Windows Applications. I found it intriguing and fairly inexpensive. Even Loonyfornia's Governer Schwarzenegger thinks its a good thing. What could possibly be wrong? You should call PETA or ALF.
Once again, bo'chit befalls us. I do not honestly believe that swriter could possibly be better than AbiWord. When was the last time these people used AbiWord!? And, where are my defending readers ready to declare this contest as fixed!?

Speaking of non-rigged award-winning work, your favourite Community News Site Editor of the Year, stro, has sent me an incredible exclusive for those of you who just love AbiWord...to a point that there should be laws or somethin'. Stro was playing about with the freshest Fedora release of Inkscape...that he has, and created some yummy treats. First up, an A-Swoosh/Swish WallPaper, (I don't want to discriminate against swooshers or swishers, but I do believe left to right is a swish, and I also believe that swoosh is more fun to say), that reminds me disastrously of the gnome-foot image I like the very least (BRING BACK THE MUD!). And if you don't find that pretty enough, he's also created (Dom, brace yourself), The Cute Blue Ant! It's even cuter than the original, but he put in that sign...well, no accounting for taste ;o) Thank you, stro, for this yummy treat.

§ Come play with us! The doxygen is fine! Abiword w/o Gnome impossible? :
→ Ingo Lantschner informs us that The RULE Project, Red Hat for Low Memory, has found its way to the Congo-areas of Africa. Like the Lord High Pumbah, Marco Fioretti, Ingo has questions reguarding Abi's dependency on Gnome libraries. In reality, Abiword only depends on some GTK-libraries. Building from source would hide most of that, as seeing that, in order to get a build with actual GNOME dependencies (like Nautilus), the build would have to use the option --enable-gnome. As far as pre-built binaries go, the “normal” build has “gtk” It should be noted, I suppose, that this does not appear to exist....
§ It has just come to my attention that Lingala has, unfortunately for some, replaced Lojban as the language all the cool kids are speaking. Questions about the Windows installer ,

→ Upon reading the interesting development last week about the Windows installer being localisable, Karl Ove Hufthammer has come back to bring the Nynorsk uptodate for both AbiWord and the Windows installer. Meantime, Jeremy continues to make the installer as easy as possible for translators to keep uptodate. People wanting to get their translations uptodate for the Installer may download/update their own copy of the CVS HEAD source code and goto: abi\src\pkg\win\setup\NSISv2\ and edit the appropriate abi_lng_<language>.nsh file or if it is missing, copy out a known language file and begin translating that one, as is usually done with string files and add it to the abi_dict_list.nsh file.
§ Well, I'm assuming you can do that string-esk translation part, but it seems logical. Perhaps, if you speak any of the languages mentioned here, you could just maybe really help with that. I know you all just scroll past it...it's not helping get rid of it. Brazilian Portuguese localization update :
→ Nelson Ferraz seems happy to participate in the community side of Free Software. While sending in the Brazilian Portuguese translation, he explained, “Since this is my first contribution to this project, I'm not sure if there's anything left to do; any input will be appreciated.” Maybe this story will encourage you to...never mind, you've already read it twice today.
§ Gyih! Nelson sent one of those hard-to-convert .po files. A note to future translators: Strings are nicer. commit: NSIS v2 compiling with MinGW :
→ For users of MinGW trying to get AbiWord to build, Jeremy has created a linker script that does work with atleast one version of MinGW/gcc, but if that doesn't work, then run ld -verbose > lscript.mingw and, “Copy this over the one in the NSIS subdir, comment out the header, and add a chunk so the .ndata section is placed after the .idata (imports) section.” You should note, however, that is highly recommended you use NSIS compiled with MSVC rather than MinGW for a greater probability of success. NullSoft's own official binary releases are, of course, compiled under MSVC.
§ For less daring and/or less technical Windows users, AbiWord will continue to be distributed as binary within itsown installer for the forsee-able future. Are we ready for 2.0.3? :
→ Martin asks everybody's favourite question, “Who wants free beer?” Outside of chat, of course, he also got around to our users' favourite paraphrased question, “Is it time to release yet another, better version of AbiWord?” Right now the real question is, “Can Abiword withstand Jordi's excessive use of footnotes and endnotes?”

→ Hub continues to prove his AbitudeNEATO of total coolness, as he begins the creation of a builder for the MacOS X port. Currently it only does some minor work with the peers and Fink, and it creates a disk image for distribution. There is much work to be done.

Traffic on the user mailing list is sporadic at best. Often, a good topic comes up, but users tend to only respond to the original poster rather than the list (as well), which limits what I would add, as the only lone threads I post are announcements of importance or points of great interest, e.g. solutions to problems in a preceeding thread. Where does Abiword find it's fonts

→ Johnathan asks a question that pops up from time to time on the list. After finding a large list of fonts after installing AbiWord, he would like to know how AbiWord found all of those fonts on his system. Here's the secret, and by secret, I mean documented bit that gets looked over, AbiWord doesn't do a thing; it asks FontConfig to do it all for it.

A slumping market place and a low commit level is suggestive of, “a bad week.” It has been put forward that many of the AbiHackersNEATO have slowed their online activity as life in the real world resumes after the Holidays, most notably, for those in University. “With the possibility of the next stable release ahead,” as Alan Bluespan put it, “You can't help but to hope that there will be a swift recovery.” Louis Bugkeyser, however, noted that with two new developers entering the fold and the resilience of the French, things are, indeed, looking bright for the future.

To return the moment there's a meta bug for (I'm assuming) 2.0.3 or otherwise 2.2.0. In the meantime, Dom has a thingy for 2.2.

Abi's Relatives
Several projects are used by, use or synchronise with AbiWord. Some of the most noteworthy libraries and applications will be summarised here. Some may be added under guise of the GNOME Office Suite.; others may be added because it's really just a plug by request. Want your project plugged? Send money to Dom. I'm offering rates of $10 per plug, $25 for a month-long plug, $50 for a quartly plug and $200 to go all year. P*ing us off or the discontinuation of this section does not result in a refund.
Libraries
AbiWord uses several libraries, and other sub-applications, to give it that extra bit of polish. Here, you will learn whatever news I scrape together or has been sent to me in relation to them. I wanted to do more this week, but not so much.
Nadav has written a report for his Natural Language interests to explain the multiple-document summarisation of OTS. This is present in its original form, as you editor, Billy Bo Bob Jim Jo, has yet to re-read it with a critical eye. History has shown that there is a small army of netizens with nothing better to do than criticise work they don't do, so, I feel rest assured that we will get fixes soon enough. All AbiSpelling Nazis should consider diff -u format ;o)
Marc doesn't do news anymore, but if you look at last week's newsletter, you'll learned what happened earlier on this week.
Weirdest thing found this week regarding the handling of standard style 154. That problem is now fixed ^_^

Applications
AbiWord is crucial to the use of, coordinates development with, or to some extent relies upon a number of applications. Only one two of these applications make it easy for me to steal information from them, so, we're talking about a lot of blog reading.
Windows WorldHere, we'll explore our Windows associates more. Well...it's currently only the one, but it's a very important one.
Nullsoft Scriptable Install System
Release Candidate #2 came out earlier this week, with one more expected to follow. “ This second release candidate contains bugfixes releated [ed. sic] to the user interface, language strings and user variables. It also includes an updated compiler interface with an improved user interface.” Windows users may grab their copy here. Now, as you might have noticed, AbiWord uses NSIS, but NSIS doesn't use AbiWord, or even Enchant for that matter!
GNOME Office SuiteSince I don't know of applications outside of AbiWord that use AbiWord, I'll be doing this Gnome Office business. These people should have newsletters, so, I can steal crap from them.
It appears that 1.2.0 didn't turn out to have stamped out all the bugs Jody was hoping to kill. Additionally, some work needs to be done with regard to correctly implementing the state of manual recalculation. Now, in the modern world....
GtkAction is, now, officially in action, clearing up some time to commit Nick's xor's encryption import for xls, JGill's re-freeze option, JHM's header fix for the ia64 breakage on 1.2. Additional patches have come in, like Jean's yummy bubble-enabling and JonKare's fixing up of the Python bindings. While the GtkAction integration fixes problems that have cropped up in the custom combo boxes and gradient themes, Jody has been distracted by “interesting bugs” that those pesky responsible users have been finding, preventing all sorts of new features from being implemented. I'm sensing Martin and Jody have something in common.
The ODBC provider, virtually abandoned until this point, has been brought back up to functionality, thanks to Jon.
Someone want to point me somewhere?
If you got confused by the releases, my last look at the archives says that 0.7.10 is the current release. Between the two of them (0.7.9) the following enhancements have been folded in: support for middle mouse button paste, update Primary whenever selection changes, rewrite of clipboard and selection code (now in a sane xml format), translation updates from many known GNOME names in (cs?, sr?, Portuguese, Spanish), Home/End keys function within structural elements and for the whole document when used with Control. Needless to mention, I'm sure, are the 20+ bug fixes.

As you can tell by the lateness (if you haven't gotten use to that), the end of this week has been very distracting, preventing many things from getting done. I did, indeed, get an update! Unfortunately, due to technical problems I see no point in handling, I was unable to do anything with it. I think I have a tricky bit in the memory or on the drive, and I'll be looking at that this week. Expect an update in next week.
Nathan Bullock and Ryan Pavlik are swiftly working their way from playful user to... AbiAddictNEATO! Nelson Ferraz has also put a smile on my face with his positive attitude to doing translation work. I was beginning to think we should offer small monetary prises to encourage such work. You users make me so proud of our little AbiMunnity. See, it is like Community but...ok, see, that's why I didn't neato it.
