Thanks to some mailing list searching, I think I have found the answer to
this. FreeBSD does not provide wchar.h, but instead cwchar.h. We need to
conditionally include this in hj's wchar manipulation code. However, I
don't know of any FreeBSD specific enviroment variables that we can test.

So, I need someone with access to a FreeBSD machine to test this theory,
so that we can get that build working again.
