Is there anything keeping you from using CVS? Speaking for myself only,
I have never used those files(*tar.gz) to build abi, so for all I know
they are broken. I use the CVS system and it works great. A lot of
people here use the CVS system, so if you use that and have problems
chances are more people might be able to help you out. There are
detailed instructions on using the cvs at the AbiWord home page that got
me up and running pretty quick, so I think you'll have good luck with
it. And if you're going to be actually contributing code(unlike me :-(
