You may need to find some fixed tar source around somewhere.
If it's the same problem I've got, I think the problem is in the tar
program, not in the command you use to create the archives. I've got a
friend who sense me regular source drops, and I'm not able to unpack
them with Aladdin Expander for Windows (Hey Leonard - you know anyone at
the old company who could fix this?). It complains there's junk at the
end of the files.
The files unpack OK under Windows and CygWin, a unix-like environment
for Windows which is fairly source code compatible with Linux.
I have a fuzzy recollection that the junk at the end of the files was
put there on purpose for interoperability with some broken tar command
on some old system somewhere.
