Subject: status of Latin-2 languages?

There's recently been a flutter of interest on the abiword-user list about
using AbiWord for Latin-2 languages:

  http://www.abisource.com/mailinglists/abiword-user/00/February/0031.html
I know Henrik has done a lot of great groundwork on this recently, but I
suspect that there's probably still more work to be done for these folks,
such as:
  - X input methods (??)
  - removing Latin-1 dependencies in the Unix font manager
  - charset mapping for missing Unicode characters
As a first step, would someone be willing to summarize what currently does
and doesn't work, so that anyone who's interested in getting this working
knows where to start?
I suspect that only a subset of my old summary of design issues will be
relevant:

  http://www.abisource.com/mailinglists/abiword-dev/00/January/0091.html
In particular, I'm pretty sure that neither of the following apply:
  http://www.abisource.com/mailinglists/abiword-dev/00/January/0092.html
  http://www.abisource.com/mailinglists/abiword-dev/00/January/0093.html
My hope here is that any Latin-2 issues can be resolved fairly easily,
allowing us to then move on to tackling some of the more complex issues
being raised by folks in the recent CJK threads.
