This was a major point of contention a while back because of the way
Windows handles file extensions versus the way Linux does. The recent "ms
word bug" thread which started in abiword-user and drifted over here is
just a small taste of that.

If you think you can improve the algorithm, go for it. Just be careful not
to do so in such a way as to cause problems in the Windows build.

I have seen this behavior before, and I believe it might be related to
