This is totally great ... but I don't understand why it
has to take place in platform dependant code and can't
be made to work in a platform independant way.

Just a gentle reminder to folks out there that they should
always to try to the best of their abilities to think
about implementing stuff in a way which is totally
platform independant. It certainly makes maintaining
various ports easier!
