Versions of "vim" which have shipped with Red Hat 6.2
and later _do_ have this feature, and it's on by
default.

My take: It does the right thing for me about 2/3rds
of the time. Sometimes it's annoying but (but then,
isn't this the point) if I was completely used to it,
I'm sure I'd find its disappearance or absence pretty
annoying.

I'll posit one idea and then return to lurking, since
I'm not offering code at the minute:

                Auto{prefs,help,etc}

The average word processor (and above-average ones,
like Abiword :-) has a bundle of cool features that
many users would appreciate, if only they knew about
them.

In this case, the first time you open a document with
a saved cursor position other than at the beginning,
you are offered:

When opening documents Abiword can auto-
matically return to the place last edited/
        read/whatever.

Would you like to enable this feature? It
can be disabled by deselecting "Return to
saved cursor position" in the preferences
dialog, accessible from the tools menu.

        [ YES ]
        [ NO ]
[ NO, AND DON'T BOTHER ME AGAIN ]
[ READ MORE ABOUT THIS STUFF ]

For all the slagging off that people do of Word, this
sort of things can actually be quite useful (I forget
what they call it). In my opinion, only the implement-
ation sucks. Because Abi has a much more direct user
feedback path, its behaviour under these circumstances
can be tuned to behave much more sensibly.

Matthew.
