FWIW, MS Word 2000 doesn't allow you to choose the screen background
color (as far as I know), but it does have an option to let you
display things as white text on a blue background. I tried it for a
while some time ago, and I changed back. I don't recall if I just
didn't like the looks or if there was something broken about it. This
was probably present in earlier versions of MS Word.

FWIW, Lotus WordPro (or at least its predecessor AmiPro) had an option
for setting the "non-paper" part of the window to whatever color you
wanted. AFAIR, it had options to customize the colors of lots of
things (and otherwise also kicked MS Word butt on every feature I
cared about 5-6 years ago when I was using it).
