    Well, most professional (and some entry-level) DTD programs
    automatically ligate 'fi' 'ffi' and 'fl' character sequences.
    But I don't know how these programs handle selection. Might be
    worth checking out (does anybody here has access to e.g. Adobe
    Indesign?).
