In the Stable branch jpeg support is a compile time option
(the Windows build defaults to PNG and BMP, but I think
the other platforms only include PNG support).

In the Head branch it is graphical importer
(the Windows build has BMP support moved to a plugin as well
so it is like the other platforms with only native PNG
support; other platform users please correct me if I'm mistaken).

There are also the ImageMagick and GTKish plugins that add support
for a variety of image formats.
