    By the way, I've confirmed that peer fribidi is
    definitely not (well not as is anyway) enough to
    build AbiWord under Linux. Installing the fribidi
    from SourceForge is the correct fix.

    This is probably obvious to the rest of you but I'm
    hopeless with build systems ): - thanks to those who
    tipped me off.
