You don't have to recompile the whole source of abiword. To build the
plugins all you need (on linux, anyway - Darwin needs the application
also) are the headers, and certainly it would be possible to create an
abiword-devel package consisting only of abi's headers.

Serious pain; not really worth the effort.
Which is not to say creating a library out of a subset of abi's classes
isn't a good idea. The abibits module does this for MacOSX/Cocoa and
I've been using it as the back-end of my HanAbi application.
