I've got some excessively optimistic notions of it being back and forward
compatible.

If a basic minimal API was implemented for say Abiword 2.6 and specified
that a space could be reserved for some kind of unknown embedded content,
it would mean there would be a better chance of Abiword 2.6 still being
able to do a basic rendering of whatever Abiword 3 or 4 documents might
be.

Sure it is ridiculously optimistic but maybe it might appeal to one of the
developers to set things up for the future put in some architecture that
will help avoid file format incompatiblity in the future.
