this closes #401, but leaves #397 and #405.
hopefully, the net effect is a much smoother experience
with fewer quirks than before (and than before last week's
mess-o-changes).
please, if you have a chance, give it a try and see
what you think. i don't care if it "doesn't exactly
match key-for-key some high-priced application....", but
only that it works in a nice and logical manner (and
without crashing :-)
