Please don't take this as *too* sarcastic, but this statement is very
much analogous to saying "the C compiler can't be counted on, so let's
implement this in assembler."

In point of fact, Gnome and Gtk+ RPMs are available from
www.gnome.org, so for most people this is a no-brainer. If you don't
have sources, getting the libraries to compile is easy. At least it
is on NetBSD, which is an architecture hardly any Gnome or Gtk+
developers use. If it's easy on NetBSD, and it's not easy on your
system, your problem is your system, not the Gnome or Gtk+
distribution. The solution is to do some testing and release
engineering before you ship new versions of your system, not to
suggest that some AbiWord hacker should spend valuable, scarce time
reimplementing Gtk+ or, even worse, inventing Yet Another Toolkit.
