Yes, AbiWord version 0.7.6 for BeOS had some problems with timers, but
Danial Berlin has taken care of them. AbiWord 0.7.7 should work a lot
better. If you can't wait, you can check out the nightly builds via CVS.
Otherwise give us a couple weeks and it will be taken care of.
