Is it possible to keep the core dumps for debug or some other
build options. I find core dumps an extremely useful means of debugging
code.

Those questions are much harder and require a detailed knowledge of
abiword. Hacking abiword is like doing a Science discovery experiment. You
start at the edges and gradually work your way into the middle learning
along the way.
