Re: Abiword in Maemo plataform

    Hi Rob,

    first of all, I'd like to introduce myself, and tell you guys about
what we've been up to. I'm the team leader for INdT's Office Suite project.

    Our team has five developers: Renato (whose work you've just started
seeing), Daniel (which has just started working on OpenDocument Text
support on AbiWord), Eduardo (who is porting Gnumeric to the Maemo
Development platform), Luciano (who is working on OpenDocument
Spreadsheet support on Gnumeric), and yours truly (I work with the
non-sexy stuff: integration, patch management, project management, etc)

    Given that, I'd like to propose the following, as our commitment,
with regards to AbiWord, for the following 6-12 months:

    - complete the port of AbiWord to the Maemo Development Platform,
and other embedded platforms, in general;
    - decrease memory and resource usage of AbiWord (maybe during
compile time, using configure arguments);
    - complete the read and write support of OpenDocument Text files on
AbiWord;

    To resume, the main goal of our team is to provide a complete Office
Suite (Gnome Office) for the Maemo Development Platform (and thus, for
any devices which use this platform), supporting fully the OASIS
OpenDocument standard, and using as little resources as possible.

    I'm not a member of the AbiWord developer community (yet :D ), but I
would like to give my opinion here too.

    I completely agree with Robert, here. Though we tried to make our
changes as little intrusive as possible, the patch is still too big to
be applied directly on CVS HEAD. But still, the main reason why I
believe a branch could be used is to make sure our changes are as
generic as possible, making it easier to port AbiWord to other embedded
platforms. (thus, giving the team more time to implement and review
necessary changes)

    Resuming: of course we (INdT) would like to see Maemo being
officially supported on version 2.4.0 of AbiWord, but we do not mind
having this patch merged later, if that means higher code quality. (in
fact, we are ready to work on any modifications to our patch you might
feel as necessary)

    Thanks a lot :)

    Best regards,

    Rodrigo
