At least one bug report of a ligature OK on screen but won't print:

Bug 5578 reports that "fi" ligature is displayed correctly on screen but is not
printed correctly on a Konica printer (this might be printer font substitution):
"The font was Arial, 11 point. In the memo wherever the two
character combination "fi" appeared, it was replaced with a dot. Some other
character combinations also did this. In some cases, a character partially
overprinted the preceding character."
